What’s happening with C.M.L.?

The link for this week's live-streamed service is here.

Thanks to Pam Day for this week's post.

For those who are new to our community let me first explain a little bit about C.M.L.

The Centre for Missional Leadership was formed in 2015 under the umbrella of St. Andrews Hall at U.B.C. as a teaching initiative, to equip Pastors and Lay Leaders for the task of nurturing flourishing churches in a “Post Christian, largely secular” world. (more info at the cml.ca/web page.)

This is done in small church groups, by participating in seminars, coaching, sharing of ideas and practical applications during a nine month period. Our group members, Rev. Irwin, Norma, Joan, Darlene, Linda & myself met via Zoom with participants from all parts of Canada, and of many different denominations and church situations. There was much to learn from this format.

You may recall that we did a survey earlier this year to assess our strengths, gifts and assets as a church, as recognised by members of the congregation. It was an uplifting event that provided us all with a clearer picture of who we are as church family, and what we, and our building, may offer in the future, and where there might be opportunities for growth.

Since then we have been considering how we could utilize all those assets, both within the church and greater community.

As we are encouraged to find meaningful ways to share and extend those gifts to “the neighbours beyond our walls” in a sincere and sustainable way.

Of course, one of the challenges for ministry that we kept bumping into was our very location itself!

Most other church’s programs are located within easy walking or bus access, and for all we have a great mobility and accessible building design, and large level parking lot, it’s location limits our possibilities to minister unless one has a car!

Back to the drawing board!  We know that Jesus calls us to love our neighbours as ourselves, and to share the Good News of His love to all people, so there has to be a way.

And of course there is. After much prayerful discussion and brainstorming we came to the conclusion that God has “sent” many “neighbours” to our church already, in the form of the Groups who utilize and rent our space on a regular basis.  Now to the question of “how” we demonstrate the love of Christ to them in a way that is acceptable and meaningful to them, and possible and sustainable to us, given that we are an aging congregation.

God be praised, in doing what this church does best, hospitality!

And so the birth of this idea, to thank our rental groups for supporting us, by providing them with a simple cookie, coffee and a warm welcome.  This is something that God has enabled us to do.

The first of these was the Parkinson’s Society support group, they meet every month except July, so Darlene contacted and arranged for us to host a thanks and welcome for their wrap up meeting in June.  It was a surprise to the participants, and was very warmly received by all.

The second time was for the AGM of the Summergate Community Association, where we served Tea, Coffee and water along with the cookies.  There again it was received warmly, and offered many opportunities to have conversations with our “neighbours” before their meeting began.

Coffee and Cookies for Summergate meeting

We intend to continue to show our appreciation in this way to several other groups who meet here.

However, the mission is not just to the neighbours beyond our walls, but to our own church family also, and how we all may participate more fully in our worship time.

Give the preacher a different platform?

To that end it was decided to do a little experiment with a slightly different style of worship from time to time; and to that end, when there are 5 Sundays in a month (about 4 per year) that 5th Sunday may be a little different from what we normally do. Perhaps incorporating your own prayers (so others may pray with you) if you would like to share them, as part of “the Prayers of the People”. Doing some different styles of music and praise, maybe you have a favourite that you would like to share with us too. Just let us know beforehand so these changes might be arranged within the form of service. And do give feedback, we learn and grow when we do new things, but we need to evaluate also.

Come and give it a try, after all there are many styles and ways to worship, as one finds out when travelling and visiting different churches.

The next 5th Sunday is August 30th  and we are considering doing a B.B.Q. lunch following service. Instead of our usual fellowship time.   Lets celebrate the end of Summer holidays together!

Hazy, Lazy Days of Summer.

The link for this week's live-streamed service is here.

Pam Day

It has been a very long time since I had children in the school system, but I still look forward to the “Summer Break”.  Someone was really “on to” something when they gifted us this “Rhythm for Life”.

In a world full of troubles, and with lives full of “to do” lists, we all need to hit pause from our busy schedules, and  Summer Break gives us permission to do just that.

What a blessing to have an opportunity to change gear!

Will it be a time of rest and re-creation, or will it be the fulfillment of another “Bucket List”?

For me, this year has been one of many travels; some planned and some unexpected, but all were meaningful and enriching, although quite exhausting!
We get to choose what works for us as individuals, but the Lord who made us knows exactly what we need.

This can be the gift of time to rest and be refreshed, to visit and re-connect with loved ones; to reflect upon our values and re-assess our goals and objectives, and to reflect upon our relationship with God and His provision for us.

Jesus and his disciples took time away from the neediness of the crowds and demands of the day, to rest and pray and be refreshed; and if they needed this, I certainly do!

Psalm 23, leads us beside still waters to restore our souls.

As Summer draws to a close I am ready to rest awhile and take some time reading the Word,  prayer and contemplation; that I might seek the Lord and re-connect to the Giver of Life, and re-orient my wayward self to His purpose for my life.

Ed. Note: My thanks to Pam for this week's post. She has given me a little time for rest and refreshment too.

Merry Mayhem!

We have two contributors for today's blog. Jim shared the above picture of the lunch bunch having a get-together at Zanzibar before it closes for good.

Pam wrote about her adventures by plane and taxi.

Merry Mayhem!

What is it about the month of December that causes normally rational people to go off the rails?

Well, I have a theory about that, but I will tell you my tale first.

I recently took my first ever trip to Calgary with a 48hr. turn-a-round, to deliver an 18th birthday gift to my granddaughter; this being the only window of opportunity in all our calendars. I congratulated myself on my foresight in purchasing and packing their Christmas gifts to take with me, as Canada Post was about to go on strike.

However, it was a very tight “fit” for me, as I had agreed to sing at the concert at St. Paul’s church on the afternoon of my return.

The trip to Calgary was lovely, I hit a chinook and felt very overdressed in my winter clothes, so I was lulled into a sense that all was well and relaxed for the first time in several busy months!

So the first indicator to the contrary started after boarding the plane for home.

For some strange reason the pilot decided to de-ice the plane before take off. Strange, in that the plane had come from L.A., and Calgary was around 10C and sunny, so a delay of 15mins before take off. Then as we arrived in Victoria the pilot turned off the engines, the reason being that there was an engine issue which needed a cool down before we could dock!

I started to feel my blood pressure rising with stress, as I realised that I may not make the concert on time. But five minutes later we docked, and I flew into action with one last hope to make it in time.

I had devised a plan when booking, I had the aisle seat on row 10, and immediately retrieved my backpack from the overhead bin and proceeded to excuse myself to get to the front, to get off ASAP.

I ran to the Terminal exit and fell into the first cab! I was determined to do everything possible to fulfil my promise!

Well, Murphy was alive and well! And I found out quickly that in my hurry, I had dropped my small purse, which contained everything! No money, no credit card, no keys for my house or car!

I directed the driver back to the airport right away, and West Jet personnel were able to retrieve my purse in about 15 long minutes, Hallelujah!

So back to the cab…The concert had started late, and I got there about half way through the performance!

What in the world possessed me to ever think that this was a good plan!

But we do it all the time, especially in December. The worldly pressures are all around us, from without and within! We are propelled into this craziness, the advertising, media hype, deadlines, all the shopping, baking, parties: the deadline being Dec. 24th!

The only thing all this busyness accomplishes is stress! By the time Christmas rolls around we are exhausted and burnt out. Stop the merry-go-round, I want to get off!

And yet, we say we do this to celebrate the coming of the Christ child, the Prince of Peace!

Oh how I long for that Peace.

“How silently, how silently the wondrous gift is given”

Lesson learned;  I am resolved to resist those pressures that seek to rob me of the coming of the Christ Child.

Ed. Note:  Thanks to Pam and Jim for giving me a week off!
